What Is Hemicolectomy?
Hemicolectomy, also known as partial colon resection, is a surgical procedure that removes a diseased or damaged section of the colon (large intestine). This treatment is typically recommended for conditions such as:
- Colon Cancer – Removing cancerous tissue to prevent its spread.
- Diverticulitis – Treating inflammation or infection of pouches in the colon.
- Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis – Eliminating severely inflamed bowel segments.

There are two main types of hemicolectomy:
- Right Hemicolectomy: Removes the right side of the colon.
- Left Hemicolectomy: Removes the left side of the colon.
After the affected section is removed, the healthy ends of the colon are reconnected (anastomosis) to restore normal bowel function.
